NIBEC - the Nanotechnology and Integrated BioEngineering Centre is a well established world-class research complex at the University of Ulster's Jordanstown campus. NIBEC represents a consolidation of research groups, associated with advanced material types used in medical devices, electronics, photonics, tissue engineering, nanotechnology, microfluidics, sensors, MEMS, optical and environmental devices. The centre is based within the Engineering Research Institute (ERI).
The multi-million pound purpose-built facilities house some of the most sophisticated nano-fabrication, biological and characterisation equipment in the world. NIBEC is staffed by an internationally recognised and well experienced team of researchers and academics working predominantly at the interface of bioengineering and nanotechnology.
Technology transfer is a key objective and a number of successful spin-out companies have emerged from NIBEC in recent years, the most successful of these being Heartscape, HeartSine Technology, Intelesens (formerly Sensors Technology and Devices Ltd.) and spin in SiSaf . The centre has also a well established track record in consultancies and materials testing and analysis.
With a strong fundamental materials research base the centre has focused on academic, clinical and government partnerships in order to sustain it's excellent technology transfer track record, further develop i'ts well established global partnerships and enhance the numbers of highly qualified, economically relevant undergraduate and post graduate students.
Postgraduate programmes include a set of Masters Programmes and PhD Opportunities. Full details of all courses offered by the School of Engineering can be found on the University's web site Online Prospectus.
The centre has numerous collaborations throughout the world and thus attracts projects, students and interest from a broad range of countries.
