Ulster University final year PhD student, David Bishop, has won 2nd place at the World Final of the IOM3 World Lecture Competition which was held at the University of California, Riverside USA on 23rd October. This prestigious international competition is held annually at locations throughout the world by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and sponsored by CBMM, Luxfer Group and Rolls Royce.

David presented his lecture entitled, “Addressing an Unmet Need in von Willebrand Disease: A Biosurface Solution” to a judging panel of academic and industrial experts from around the globe.  He finished as the highest ranked University based entrant narrowly losing out to South African contestant Raphael Smith from CapeRay Medical in Cape Town. The other finalists were from prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, University of Florida and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, to name a few. In recognition of his success, David was awarded a MacBook Air as well as a cash prize.

David, who is completing his Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering at the Nanotechnology and Integrated Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC), participated in the World Final as the Ireland representative having won the All Ireland Final stage of the competition earlier this year.

The lecture topic was based on work from his PhD project, supervised by Prof Brian Meenan and Dr Adrian Boyd, in collaboration with colleagues from the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Wherein a potential diagnostic device for von Willebrand disease is being developed and validated through a dynamic platelet flow assay.

The IOM3 World Lecture Competition is one of the foremost of its kind in the world and aims to promote the importance of communication skills in the fields of science and technology.
