Alan Brown is a Chartered Engineer and comes from a background of both industrial and academic research. His current research interests include the development of bioreactors for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering applications, including the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in their design and characterisation. His MEMS expertise is now directed at both the integration of sensor systems into bioreactors and the microstructuring of biomaterials for enhancing cell responses as well as the development of microfluidic systems.
Prior to working at the University of Ulster, he spent 9 years in the semiconductor and MEMS industries in both process engineering and R&D, including the development of the worlds first MEMS micromirror chip with integrated position sensing. His industrial experience includes three patents and a number of peer reviewed publications. This industrial experience has also led to publications in the field of new product development and engineering management.
Alan Brown obtained an MEng (hons) degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in 1993 and a PG Diploma in Manufacturing: Management and Technology from the Open University in 2001. He is a professional member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and an Associate Member of the City and Guilds of London Institute.
